EURAM Conference on June 19-22, 2018 in Reykjavik, Iceland

Natalie Laibach attended the Annual European Academy of Management (EURAM) Conference on “Accelerating Knowledge Creation in Management” which took place in Reykjavik (Iceland) from 19 to 22 June 2018. The goal of the conference was to exchange of ideas among economists and mangers reframing these challenges as opportunities for innovation, which is often referred to as sustainability oriented innovation (SOI), where bioeconomy seeks to belong to. She presented innovation types of the bioeconomy and first results of the Global Bioeconomy Expert Survey in the Sustainability, Circular and Green Tech Innovation track. The study is part of the STRIVE C2 Component and will hopefully initiate very interesting policy and management discussions.

21st Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis on “Framing the future through the Sustainable Development Goals” on June 13-15, 2018 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia

Neus Escobar attended the 21st Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis on “Framing the future through the Sustainable Development Goals” which took place in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) from 13 to 15 June 2018. The goal of the conference was to promote the exchange of ideas among economists conducting quantitative analysis of global economic issues. Particular emphasis was placed on applied general equilibrium methods, data, and application. She presented for the first time the assessment of the global land use and greenhouse gas emission implications from targets on bioplastic consumption in leading market regions including the EU, United States, Brazil and China; based on the very regarded GTAP model. The study arises the STRIVE C2 Component and is meant to provide very interesting policy discussions.

Annual Meeting of SETAC Europe on May 13-17, 2018 in Rome, Italy

Neus Escobar contributed to the discussion on “New frontiers in Life Cycle Inventory data: collection and modelling” with the work entitled “Carbon footprint from Brazilian soybeans based on spatially-explicit life cycle inventories, including land use change” at the 28th Annual Meeting of SETAC Europe in Rome (Italy), from May 13th to 17th, 2018.

With this, she presented the TRASE-LCA tool, recently developed together with our colleagues from the Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI: https://trase.earth) to quantify the carbon footprint of all the supply chains embodied in the whole Brazilian soybean supply for a given year. The carbon footprint module is based on environmental data at the municipality level, together with carbon stock losses due to land conversion into soybean, obtained by remote sensing for the period 2010-2015. It is ultimately intended to inform governance decisions and deforestation and climate mitigation policies, on the one hand; and sustainable production and consumption, on the other.

Global Bioeconomy Summit 2018, Workshop about Africa-EU bioeconomy on April 19, 2018 in Berlin

STRIVE project leader Jan Börner and senior researcher Jan Janosch Förster engage in interdisciplinary scientific dialogues on the topic of Africa-EU bioeconomy at the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2018.

An interactive workshop on the bioeconomy region of Africa aims to create an engaging platform to discuss strategies for bioeconomy development in Africa and to highlight opportunities for international collaboration in bioeconomy development. Topical questions include: what are the challenges involved from a regional perspective? And what are potential starting points for a deepened cooperation between European and African bioeconomy regions? Broadening our perspective, we also aim to address challenges and opportunities for integrating African bioeconomy regions into a global bioeconomy while using the SDGs as global sustainability safeguards.
